SUMMARY:General Meeting\, Dr. Doug Needham: Photomorphogenic Responses-Phototropism & Photoperiodism\, ZOOM meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Needham’s professional objective has been “to educate and foster the professional development of others.”\nAfter earning his PhD in Horticultural Plant Breeding and Genetics in 1989\, Dr. Needham served as Professor of Floriculture at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Needham joined Longwood Gardens in July 2007\, serving as Vice President of Education until he retired in July 2017.Dr. Needham joined Longwood Gardens in July 2007\, serving as Vice President of Education until he retired in July 2017.\nDr. Needham began growing flowering plants as a child\, and that passion continues throughout retirement. He caught the “Orchid Bug” as a teen from his grandmother and\, in his words\, “never recovered.” He grows hundreds of orchids in cool and warm glasshouses\, designs and cultivates English-inspired perennial borders\, and is working to restore a native prairie. Dr. Needham shares his passion through workshops\, presentations\, tours\, and consulting.\nHis lecture is entitled\, “Photomorphogenic Responses-Phototropism & Photoperiodism.” Yes\, that sounds frightening\, but it really has to do with the effects of light and darkness on plants\, something we all need to learn more about. Dr. Needham is very down-to-earth and an engaging speaker. Hope you will join us via Zoom. \nOur show table is virtual during the pandemic. Members can submit up to two pictures (orchids) for judging\, definite deadline end-of-day\, Saturday September 12. E-mail photos to Rich and Joan. E-mail photos only\, no submissions any other way. \nrichackerman@gmail.com\, jmconnors25@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Jason Fischer of Orchids\, Ltd\, Potting Neofinetia falcata
DESCRIPTION:Jason Fischer’s life-long passion for orchids started at age 5 when he began working in his father Jerry’s business\, Orchids Limited in Plymouth\, MN. He began breeding at age 14\, first with Phals. and later other varieties. He now helps manage the business and is heavily involved in breeding and marketing.\nHe studied the Japanese language and culture in high school and college and worked in Kyoto as an English teacher. Returning in 2003\, Jason began importing Japanese orchid species\, adding a new niche to the family business. Interests include hybridizing Vanda falcata varieties and Phragmipediums.\nJason has traveled extensively presenting lectures and photographing orchids in situ. He will give us a tour of the greenhouse\, share his orchid experience in Japan\, and teach us how to pot Neofinetia falcatas in the classical Japanese form. You won’t want to miss this one. Watch your email inbox and check our website for the Zoom link.\nOrchids Limited is offering 10% off for FLOS members on all plants August 10 – 31. Select your plants on www.orchidweb.com. SUMMARY:Tom Kuligowski “Creating Better Images of Your Orchids”
DESCRIPTION:“Creating Better Images of Your Orchids” Ever wish you could take better photos of your orchids to share with friends? Join us via Zoom July 13 at 7:30 for a special treat. Professional photographer Tom Kuligowski will show us how to do it.\nTom was bitten by the “Orchid Bug” 20 years ago while photographing a neighbor’s orchids\, documenting the progression of growth through the blooms on the mature plants. He soon started his own orchid collection\, incorporating his artistic abilities with various mediums\, combining his photographic skills to create beautiful photographs of his orchids.\n“You don’t necessarily need a wealth of knowledge to capture images of your orchids. Many of today’s cameras can do the thinking for you.” With this in mind\, Tom teaches orchid hobbyists how to take better pictures of their own orchids. Whether you use a smartphone\, point-and-shoot camera\, or digital single lens reflex camera\, everyone can improve their images. Tom will show us a few simple techniques to create images that will make our photos as beautiful as our orchids. \nClick below to join meeting!

SUMMARY:John Odom- Encyclias
DESCRIPTION:John Odom has been growing orchids for over 50 years and Odom’s Orchids has been at our present location for over 40 years. He graduated from the University of Florida with his B.A. in agriculture.\nWith over 90\,000 square feet of greenhouses\, Odom’s Orchids is one of the largest retail growers and shippers of orchids in the United States. We specialize in Cattleya orchids\, but also grow quite a few other varieties\, including Vandas\, Phalaenopsis\, Lady Slippers\, Oncidiums\, and many species from different genera. Unlike many other orchid growers\, most of our orchids are mature\, blooming size plants\, so you won’t have to wait years for them to bloom.\nTheir greenhouses are located in Fort Pierce\, on Florida’s southeast coast. They are just one mile off of Interstate 95\, two miles off the Florida’s Turnpike\, about one hour north of West Palm Beach\, and about 120 miles north of Miami or Southeast of Orlando. They are open to the public during the week.\n\nHis program will be focusing on encyclias.
