SUMMARY:Patricia Harding\, Testing Orchid DNA and Developing a Family Tree
DESCRIPTION:Our March speaker will be Patricia Harding\, a world traveler\, observer\, photographer\, and writer who    also grows orchids at her Oregon home\, where she has been “stuck” for more than a year. She will talk about testing orchid DNA and developing a family tree\, how it is done and why it works. Sounds        downright scary\, right? Not so! Ms. Harding promises a science-for-the-layman presentation so we  can understand how to make an orchid family tree without knowing the DNA in all the individual   plants—all with a bit of humor and “some pretty orchid pictures.” She will also explain the reasoning behind some of the often-confusing name changes that have occurred in recent years. \n

SUMMARY:Dr. Linden Burzell speaking on cattleyas
DESCRIPTION:Linden Burzell has been growing orchids for nearly sixty years. He began collecting as a young man in Vista\, California\, buying his first plants from some of the famous Southern California growers of the late 50’s and 60’s. \nAfter graduating from UCLA\, he went on to receive his Ph.D. in Marine Microbiology from the University of Hawaii. Lin travelled for over twenty years throughout much of South East Asia and South America on business\, where he was involved in the start-up and operation of a number of large-scale shrimp and fish farms\, especially in coastal Ecuador\, India\, Malaysia and China. \nDuring his thirty years in Hawaii\, Lin was active in orchids\, and was a member of the Windward Orchid Society\, the Hawaii Orchid Society and served on the board of La Hui Okika Species Club and was president of the Lyon Arboretum Association. \nAfter re-locating to southern California in 1996\, he returned to orchid growing with a vengeance. He now maintains a growing collection of Cattleya species cultivars\, which he enjoys breeding\, growing\, exhibiting and photographing (he took all the flower photos he will show us during his presentation). Lin currently lives in Rancho Bernardo in San Diego with his wife Kimberly and two dogs. Lin is currently an Associate American Orchid Society judge in the Pacific South region.

SUMMARY:January Speaker Harry A. Gallis
DESCRIPTION:Our January speaker will be Harry A. Gallis\, MD\, from North Carolina.\nAs always\, the Zoom link will be on our homepage\n@ FLOS.org. \nDr. Harry Gallis is an American Orchid Society judge in North Carolina and a long-time grower of Antelope style Dendrobiums. His talk should give you a good overview of the various species and common hybrids you might come across as well as tips and tricks for growing and flowering your own. \nBiography  ( https://www.tidewaterorchidsociety.org/documents/TOS_Mar_2019_Newsletter.pdf ) – Dr. Harry Gallis Harry is a native of Athens\, Georgia\, and his profession is medicine. “I did most of `my training at Duke and specialized in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. Other hobbies (“fortunately not as expensive or consuming as orchids”) include gardening of all sorts. He also enjoys cooking\, Duke Basketball\, and Golf. Dr. Harry Gallis has been growing orchids since 1980. The largest groups are Cattleyas\, Phalaenopsis and Dendrobiums. His plants have received 41 AOS awards\, and\, says Harry\, “I very much enjoy growing plants for shows and awards”. He entered the AOS judging program in 1991\, and is an Accredited Judge and Past Chair of the Carolinas Judging Center in Greensboro\, NC. He is a life member of the Triangle Orchid Society\, and belongs or has belonged to most of the societies in his region. Harry has chaired local shows\, an EOC/AOS Trustees Meeting\, and the Spring Show for NCPOS\, in which he continues to exhibit\, “Always gunning for the Show Trophy.” He originally joined the AOS committee structure in 1996\, on the Education Committee. Shortly after Harry became Chair of the Carolinas Judging Center in 1999\, he was asked to take on the position of national training coordinator\, and was involved in the daunting task of trying to produce a revised training manual for the AOS judging system. He has served as Chair of the Judging Committee and is also a member of Governance and Publications. Harry and his wife\, Susie\, have two children and two granddaughters Taylor (“see namesake Rlc. Lisa Taylor Gallis ‘Taylor’ HCC/AOS) and Savannah (Dendrobium Linc’s Jewel ‘Savannah Hope’ HCC/AOS). His other favorite plants are Rlc. Susie’s Valentine ‘Harry’s Favorite’ AM/AOS\, named for his wife and Den. Alex Gallis for his son (his first personal hybrid to win an AOS award)

SUMMARY:Mary Gerritsen PhD\, Miniature Orchids and How to Grow Them
DESCRIPTION:Mary Gerritsen currently works an independent biotechnology consultant\, her “retirement” after a long career in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry. However\, much of her free time now involves orchids in some fashion or another. \nMary has a large collection of miniature orchids\, as well as numerous pleurothallids\, paphiopedilum\, bulbophyllum\, and dendrobium species which she grows outside in one of three lath houses\, or in one of her two greenhouses . In addition to growing orchids\, Mary likes to see and photograph them in their native habitats\, doing so in Australia\, Papua New Guinea\, Southeast Asia\, China\, various Mediterranean islands\, Europe\, Madagascar\, South Africa\, Mexico and other parts of Central America\, many countries in South America\, as well as various parts of the USA and Canada.  In addition to her interest in orchids and their habitats\, Mary has written\, with co-author and photographer\, Ron Parsons\, a number of books on orchids including Masdevallias: Gems of the Orchid World; A Compendium of Miniature Orchid Species; A Bay Area Guide to Orchids and Their Culture; and The American Orchid Society Guide to Orchids and their Culture. Currently Mary and Ron are working on a new four volume edition of the Compendium to be published in 2021 . Mary is the chief financial officer of the Orchid Conservation Alliance\, serves on the board of directors of the Orchid Digest\, and is a past president of the San Francisco and the Peninsula Orchid Societies. \nTalk synopsis: \nMiniature Orchids and How to Grow Them \nMary ‘s talk will cover one of her favorite topics\, miniature orchids. After a brief introduction to the topic and cultural recommendations\, she will present a selection of some of the most desirable species. Hopefully this will entice members of the audience to add some of these cuties to their orchid collections.

SUMMARY:General Meeting\, Dr. Doug Needham: Photomorphogenic Responses-Phototropism & Photoperiodism\, ZOOM meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Needham’s professional objective has been “to educate and foster the professional development of others.”\nAfter earning his PhD in Horticultural Plant Breeding and Genetics in 1989\, Dr. Needham served as Professor of Floriculture at Oklahoma State University. Dr. Needham joined Longwood Gardens in July 2007\, serving as Vice President of Education until he retired in July 2017.Dr. Needham joined Longwood Gardens in July 2007\, serving as Vice President of Education until he retired in July 2017.\nDr. Needham began growing flowering plants as a child\, and that passion continues throughout retirement. He caught the “Orchid Bug” as a teen from his grandmother and\, in his words\, “never recovered.” He grows hundreds of orchids in cool and warm glasshouses\, designs and cultivates English-inspired perennial borders\, and is working to restore a native prairie. Dr. Needham shares his passion through workshops\, presentations\, tours\, and consulting.\nHis lecture is entitled\, “Photomorphogenic Responses-Phototropism & Photoperiodism.” Yes\, that sounds frightening\, but it really has to do with the effects of light and darkness on plants\, something we all need to learn more about. Dr. Needham is very down-to-earth and an engaging speaker. Hope you will join us via Zoom. \nOur show table is virtual during the pandemic. Members can submit up to two pictures (orchids) for judging\, definite deadline end-of-day\, Saturday September 12. E-mail photos to Rich and Joan. E-mail photos only\, no submissions any other way. \nrichackerman@gmail.com\, jmconnors25@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Tom Kuligowski “Creating Better Images of Your Orchids”
DESCRIPTION:“Creating Better Images of Your Orchids” Ever wish you could take better photos of your orchids to share with friends? Join us via Zoom July 13 at 7:30 for a special treat. Professional photographer Tom Kuligowski will show us how to do it.\nTom was bitten by the “Orchid Bug” 20 years ago while photographing a neighbor’s orchids\, documenting the progression of growth through the blooms on the mature plants. He soon started his own orchid collection\, incorporating his artistic abilities with various mediums\, combining his photographic skills to create beautiful photographs of his orchids.\n“You don’t necessarily need a wealth of knowledge to capture images of your orchids. Many of today’s cameras can do the thinking for you.” With this in mind\, Tom teaches orchid hobbyists how to take better pictures of their own orchids. Whether you use a smartphone\, point-and-shoot camera\, or digital single lens reflex camera\, everyone can improve their images. Tom will show us a few simple techniques to create images that will make our photos as beautiful as our orchids. \nClick below to join meeting!

SUMMARY:John Odom- Encyclias
DESCRIPTION:John Odom has been growing orchids for over 50 years and Odom’s Orchids has been at our present location for over 40 years. He graduated from the University of Florida with his B.A. in agriculture.\nWith over 90\,000 square feet of greenhouses\, Odom’s Orchids is one of the largest retail growers and shippers of orchids in the United States. We specialize in Cattleya orchids\, but also grow quite a few other varieties\, including Vandas\, Phalaenopsis\, Lady Slippers\, Oncidiums\, and many species from different genera. Unlike many other orchid growers\, most of our orchids are mature\, blooming size plants\, so you won’t have to wait years for them to bloom.\nTheir greenhouses are located in Fort Pierce\, on Florida’s southeast coast. They are just one mile off of Interstate 95\, two miles off the Florida’s Turnpike\, about one hour north of West Palm Beach\, and about 120 miles north of Miami or Southeast of Orlando. They are open to the public during the week.\n\nHis program will be focusing on encyclias.
