SUMMARY:Luis M. Ortiz Jordan B.S.\, M.S.E.M. "How to Grow Miniature Orchids in South Florida"
DESCRIPTION:Our February featured speaker will be Luis Manuel Ortiz Jordan\, an expert on growing miniature orchids. \nLuis has been growing orchids for more than 20 years\, since he was 12. He discovered his love for orchids after his grandfather gave him his first plant\, Cattleya dowiana. When it bloomed\, he was infected with the orchid virus. \nLuis has a mixed collection of orchids with numerous awards from the American Orchid Society\, but his passion lies in cool-growing miniatures. They can be a challenge to grow here in hot\, humid\, South Florida. Luis will give his best advice to help your minis thrive. \nLuis is a research scientist at the UF-Scripps Biomedical Research in Jupiter. In April\, he published a paper on Eurystyles luisortizii\, an orchid he discovered in Puerto Rico. \nTo compliment his talk\, we will have a rare opportunity to acquire some exceptional miniature orchids that can be grown in warm conditions from the Tarzane Group.  If you would like to research them\, here is the list of what will be on our raffle table: Bulbophyllum moniliforme. Bulbophyllum sanitii\,  Dendrobium senile\, Haraella retrocalla\, Psygmorchis pusilla\, Pleurothallis picta\, Dendrobium toressae\, Leptotes pauloensis\, Oberonia seidenfadenii\, Barkeria palmerii and Lepanthes telipogoniflora.\n\nI am excited to learn about growing these varieties and maybe winning one myself. Bring that cash!
